Edition 2025:

Largest car dealers take a step back
Top-10 stable at almost 49 per cent market share

The 10 very largest car dealers in the Netherlands already accounted for 48.5 per cent of total sales of new passenger cars and delivery vans in 2024, the Top-50 declined slightly to a market share of 77.2 per cent, the 100 very largest together recorded 86.0 per cent of the total market. This and more follows from Edition 2025 of AUMACON's annual dealer holding company survey.

For many car dealers, the year 2024 was different from previous years in several ways. On the one hand, an increasing number of new - mostly Chinese - brands are available, while on the other, the total sales volume of new passenger cars hardly increases. At the same time, especially at the end of 2024, the van market is becoming very hectic. New tax measures (as of 2025) force many dealers to take stock. Many of these pre-registrations - given these specific vehicles - fall outside the metier of the Top-100 dealers, where, after all, the focus is mainly on passenger car sales. It is possibly an explanatory cause for the stagnation in the growth of market reach of the larger dealers, within which, incidentally, the very largest dealers do grow faster than those at the tail end of the Top-100 ranking.

There is another cause for the decline of the Top-100 in 2024. The Netherlands currently has a total of about 250 independent dealerships. Many dealers outside the Top-100 represent smaller brands such as Suzuki, Honda and Mitsubishi. Precisely these brands recorded above-average sales growth in 2024. In addition, more and more cars outside dealers are sold directly via the internet.

The combined Top-10 saw a 15.5 per cent increase in sales volume, giving them - for a 16.4 per cent rising overall market - a 48.5 per cent market share.
For the 50 largest dealers, the market share fell to over 77.2 per cent. Incidentally, at the start of this survey (in 2004), the 50 largest dealers held only a third of the car market. The Top-100 comes in at 86.0 per cent; ten years ago, this group only achieved a 66.1 per cent market share.
