2026 edition:
Belgium’s largest car dealers have once again significantly strengthened their position over the past year. The growth was not so much among the 10 largest car dealers, but the market share of the entire Top 50 rose to over 66 per cent of the total market. This represents a doubling of their market position compared with 2018. These are some of the findings from the latest Belux dealer group survey by AUMACON.
AUMACON, the Leiden-based market research agency for the mobility sector, has mapped out the largest Belgian and Luxembourg car distributors for the seventh year running. Similar research is also carried out for the Dutch market. According to AUMACON’s director, Clem Dickmann, this research is of great importance for Belgium. “Belgium still has a highly fragmented dealer landscape. There are still around 500 independent businesses operating in this market. The process of takeovers and mergers has therefore yet to really get underway. And that is necessary too. Manufacturers wish to organise their distribution networks through large, professional dealer groups. In addition, there is also an economic need for many dealers to increase their scale. AUMACON’s studies are now bringing transparency to these market processes.” According to Dickmann, this trend towards increasing scale is very much a current issue in Belgium. This development is therefore expected to continue in the coming years.
The entire Top 10 in Belgium will have achieved a total market share of 33.7 per cent by 2025. This represents a slight decline in the Top 10’s market share. This is primarily due to the decline of Tesla Motors Belgium, ranked tenth.
The total Top 50 rose to a market share of 66.1 per cent last year. By way of comparison: in 2025, the Dutch Top 10 rose to a market share of 48.5 per cent. In the Netherlands, the Top 50 achieved a market share of 77.2 per cent. There are now only around 260 independent dealerships operating in the Netherlands. Dickmann: “The Belgian market is catching up. Quite often, the language border stands in the way of further expansion. However, the average profitability of Belgian dealerships is below par, meaning that a growth strategy is necessary in many cases.”
Van Mossel now well clear in the lead
After Van Mossel Automotive Group first took over the leading position in Belgium from D’Ieteren Mobility Company in 2022, D’Ieteren regained the lead in 2023 and 2024. In 2025, it now appears that they will have to cede this position to Van Mossel for good. Despite a decline in sales volume in 2025, Van Mossel has managed to improve its market share in Belgium slightly to 6.7 per cent. The Autosphere Group (a subsidiary of European market leader Emil Frey) climbs to third place.
