Issue 2024:
The 10 very largest car dealers in the Netherlands accounted for no less than 48.9 per cent of total sales of new cars and delivery vans in 2023, the Top-50 declined slightly to a market share of 79.4 per cent, while the 100 very largest collectively recorded 89.7 per cent of the total market. This and more follows from Edition 2024 of AUMACON's annual dealer holding company survey. The survey was conducted for the 20th time this year.
2023 was another difficult car year. Although delivery problems are now a thing of the past, market demand again remained at an extremely low level. Nevertheless, the very largest Dutch dealerships appear to be able to improve their position further. The joint Top-10 saw sales volume increase by 21.7 per cent, which - on an 18.3 per cent rising overall market - gives them a market share of 48.9 per cent. Incidentally, the survey also shows that, in many cases, company returns did not grow accordingly. For two-thirds of the companies, returns actually fell in 2023 compared to 2022, while almost all holdings achieved sales growth.
For the 50 largest dealers, market share fell to over 79.4 per cent. Incidentally, at the start of this survey (in 2004), the 50 largest dealers held only a third of the car market. The Top-100 comes in at 89.7 per cent; ten years ago, this group only achieved a 66.1 per cent market share.
The Netherlands currently has a total of about 250 independent dealerships. That both the Top-50 and the Top-100 show a decline in 2023 is mainly caused by the growth of the very smallest dealers; the brands that are widely represented in this category of dealers (such as Mazda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi and Subaru) actually recorded above-average sales growth in 2023. In addition, more and more cars outside dealers are sold directly via the internet.
Van Mossel supplies one in eight new cars in the Netherlands
Van Mossel Automotive Group already took over the leading position from Stern (now Hedin Automotive) in 2018 and will maintain that position - despite a relative market share decline also in 2023. The company recorded sales of 54,647 units in the Netherlands last year, giving it 12.5 per cent of the market. Hedin Automotive (subsidiary of Sweden's Hedin Group) climbed to second place due to several acquisitions. Emil Frey Netherlands (subsidiary of European market leader Emil Frey Group) drops one place and moved into third place in 2023.
