Edition 2024:

Market share 10 largest car dealers in Belgium increased to 30 per cent

Belgium's largest car dealers improved their position once again last year. The 10 very largest car dealers accounted for exactly 30 per cent of total car sales in 2023. The Top-50 Belgian car dealers saw their combined market share rise to 58.0 per cent. These are some of the findings from AUMACON's fifth Belux dealer group survey.

Market research agency for the mobility sector AUMACON has surveyed the largest Belgian and Luxembourg car dealers for the fifth year in a row. Similar research has also been done for the Dutch market for 20 years. According to AUMACON director Clem Dickmann, this survey is particularly important for Belgium. "In Belgium, the process of takeovers and mergers has now really started. As in other European countries, pressure from manufacturers has created the need to organise auto retail around large, professional dealer groups. On top of this, there is also a desire for economies of scale. AUAMCON's surveys make this process transparent." According to Dickmann, this trend towards economies of scale has now also clearly started in Belgium. A continuation of this trend is therefore expected in the coming years.

D'Ieteren Mobility Company takes back leading position from Van Mossel

After Van Mossel Automotive Group took over the leadership position in Belgium from D'Ieteren Mobility Company for the first time in 2022, D'Ieteren returned to the lead in 2023. This result was partly achieved through a number of acquisitions, while Van Mossel actually divested some branches in 2023.
New to the podium is Autosphere, part of Europe's market leader Emil Frey of Switzerland.

The entire Top-10 reached a total market share of 30.0 per cent in Belgium during 2023. The overall Top-50 climbed to a 58.0 per cent market share last year. In comparison, last year the Dutch Top-10 climbed to a market share of 48.9 per cent. The Top-50 reached a share of 79.4 per cent. Dickmann: "The Belgian market is catching up. Here and there, the language border still hinders further expansion. But for sustainable returns, a growth strategy has become a prerequisite for a healthy future for many dealerships."
